The ensemble Marguerite Louise finds its inspiration in the mythical voice of the Marguerite Louise, revered singer of her time and cousin of François Couperin. Organist Gaétan Jarry, its founder and chief, places her as muse to the ensemble.
With a natural leaning towards the French baroque; a repertoire from which this muse shone "with great nimbleness and marvellous taste" (Titon du Tillet), the ensemble Marguerite Louise made a remarkable entry in the recording world in 2015. Its first CD, "Motets for a Princess" (L'Encelade), dedicated to Charpentier; a record heralded by critics, allowed the ensemble to make its mark with a unique emotional intensity, and a rich, generous and intimate resonance.
Marguerite Louise has had the pleasure of collaborating regularly with the Chateau de Versailles since 2016, in productions at the Royal Opera, or in sacred music programmes at the Royal Chapel, where Marguerite Louise Couperin herself performed as one of the first women to ever be admitted.
In 2017, Marguerite Louise performed the emblematic opera by Charpentier: Les Arts
Florissans, which was recorded and released under the label Château de Versailles Spectacles in September 2018 and received awards (5 Diapasons, 5 stars Classica and Diamond Opera Magazine) unanimously recognising it as a reference of the genre.
Another historic venue of Marguerite Louise is the church Saint Gervais - Saint Protais in Paris, whose organ shone during the dynasty of the Couperins. In 2018, the ensemble performed the François Couperin's motets in their entirety and regularly performs to a loyal audience. Exporting French repertoire with its aesthetic, Marguerite Louise has been acclaimed in France and abroad. (Sinfonia in Périgord, Festival de musique sacrée, Saint Malo, Cité de la Musique, Palazzo Farnese in Rome ...)
The savoir-faire and vivid personality of the choir of Marguerite Louise have been commended in lyric productions in collaboration with international orchestras such as Pygmalion by Rameau, Medea and Actéon by M-A. Charpentier along with Tafelmusik and the Toronto Opera House, as well as Berlioz's Damnation de Faust in collaboration with the orchestra Les Siècles (directed by François-Xavier Roth).
Their most recent recording “La Messe du Roi Soleil” (The Mass of the Sun King) infuses the ensemble’s aesthetic, in a new repertoire for large chorus and orchestra with that of the great royal motets of Lully and De Lalande. Released under the label Château de Versailles Spectacles in June 2019, it was awarded 5 Diapasons (Diapason magazine) and 5 stars in Classica magazine.
The ensemble Marguerite Louise is a member of the Federation of vocal and instrumental ensembles (Fédération des Ensembles Vocaux et Instrumentaux). It is supported by the Fondation Orange and Caisse des Dépôts, as principal sponsors, and the City of Versailles.
